Saint Cloud, FL
Saint Cloud, Florida, in Osceola County, is located twenty miles south of Orlando, Florida (center to center). It sits between Melbourne and Disney and is just a short drive to Lake Nona, The Medical City. St. Cloud is located in the Orlando metropolitan area and has a population of 35,183 (2010 census). St. Cloud is closely associated with the adjacent city of Kissimmee and its proximity to the major Orlando area theme parks, including Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando Resort, and SeaWorld.
Founded in 1909, St. Cloud was originally a retirement community for Civil War Veterans. In fact, it was once referred to as “Soldier City” when it was established by the Seminole Land and Investment Company in the late 1880′s. In 1909, St Cloud, Florida was incorporated and became known as a “City Celebrating Small Town Living”.
The average age is 39 years, so it is no longer a retirement community; however, it is still a great place to retire, as it boasts services and venues for retirees such as the Senior Center on 17th Avenue, near the Chris Lyle Aquatic Center which is open to residents of all ages. For boating enthusiasts, St. Cloud Lake Front Park and Marina has a beautiful 140 slip marina on East Lake Tohopekaliga (a Seminole Native American word meaning “Sleeping Tiger”) and referred to as East Lake or Lake Toho, and a spectacular new waterfront park featuring covered pavilions, walking trails, a playground with a splash pad and lakefront dining. A familiar sight throughout Saint Cloud, especially along the shores of East Lake Toho is the beautiful, rare and protected Florida Sandhill Crane.
In addition to boating, swimming and fishing, you can also enjoy Reptile World, where snakes, such as; Cobras, Mambas and Rattlesnakes are milked to supply over 300 universities and a number of pharmaceutical companies with venom for research, medicine and anti-venom production for the continental United States.
If you want to enjoy the beautiful year round weather, enjoy a round of golf, lunch or dinner at the Royal St. Cloud Links Course. For a true Florida experience you won’t soon forget, you can go on an airboat tour or visit one of Central Florida’s several theme parks, such as Disney, Universal or SeaWorld, which are all just a short 30 minute drive.
Downtown Saint Cloud, often referred to as the “Antique Capital of Osceola County,” is filled with quaint, locally owned businesses. The restaurants, including a tea room and a myriad of cafes serving up everything from country favorites to healthy fare.
There is a diverse selection of homes in St. Cloud, including some fine historic homes, dating back to 1900, many of which have been upgraded. Many of these historic homes feature ten foot ceilings, authentic hardwood floors and ornate fireplaces. There are also a wide range of newly built homes, many of which were constructed during the housing boom of 2006 & 2007. Most of the newly built homes were developed as planned communities which include club houses, community pools, and more. In addition, many of these communities are conveniently located to the Florida Turnpike and State Road 417 providing easy access to Orlando International Airport.
Since the boom, the prices of these homes have been drastically reduced and many of them are available for less than half of their original asking prices.
Whether you desire a rustic home, lakefront living, or are looking for a modern Florida home, Saint Cloud has a home that you are looking for and is an excellent place to live.
